Summer vacations are a great time to get a puppy. With the kids home, getting a puppy can teach them responsibility and keep them entertained all day! Getting a puppy is a busy and exhilarating time, so we thought we’d put a blog together on how to prepare your home for a new puppy. This should help you organize your mind so you can immediately shop for what you need and what you need to think about down the line. Here are some things to know:
Preparing for the first night home
The first night home is always stressful for puppies away from their mom and siblings. When bringing your puppy home, be sure to have a controlled and safe place for introductions. Puppies are a ball of energy, so be sure there aren’t any sharp or dangerous objects around and teach your kids how to interact with the puppy. Ensure your kids know how to pick up and hold a puppy, so they do not accidentally hurt them. Your puppy may also go to the bathroom. If introductions are inside, prep the area with pee-pee pads or newspapers. When the excitement settles, ensure you have a comfortable and safe place for your puppy to sleep and rest. You may want a family sleepover with the puppy downstairs, so they’re not alone for their first night!
Necessary Dog Supplies
Some supplies are necessary to have on hand when your puppy arrives. Food and water bowls are a must since puppies drink and eat multiple times per day. Having poop bags and cleaning supplies are also recommended as puppy messes are inevitable. Having puppy food is also essential as your puppy will get hungry after meeting their new family. A bed to sleep on and some toys will help a puppy feel cozy and comfortable. Other helpful supplies on hand are a collar with a name tag and a leash. It’s likely your puppy will not start walking on a leash immediately, but it’s not too early to get them used to a leash and keep them close if you go outside.
Training and Education
Letting your dog get used to their surroundings and a new family is the first thing to do when you get a puppy. Once your puppy feels comfortable around the family, you can start looking into training. Training is not required but is strongly recommended, especially if you have a puppy. Being so young, they can absorb so much and ultimately make your life easier in the long run. Having even basic training can do so much for a dog. Training also gets dogs used to a routine and habits. Learning how to train your dog will help them and educate you on what works for your dog and strengthen your bond. If this is your first dog, it will take time to learn about everything your dog needs. Be sure to research things you are unsure about, and ask your vet or a professional for any advice or opinions.
Preparing for the Future
Whatever you want to do for or with your dog, it’s important to prepare financially. As your dog ages, you may need or want to invest in more things dedicated to your dog. Things like pet insurance or more training may be something of interest. Finding and investing in a good veterinarian can also greatly benefit your dog’s health. Other than their initial and yearly vaccinations, the right veterinarian can help your dog’s health in the long run. In addition to a vet, you may want to look into a professional pet sitter or walker for when the kids go back to school, and your puppy is home alone. Luv My Sitter offers dog walking and pet sitting services with pet care professionals your puppy is sure to love!
Patience and Love
Knowing how to prepare your home for a new puppy is excellent, but ultimately, you need all the patience and love to get through their puppyhood. Your new little family member will be a troublemaker, but we promise they will bring so much happiness and joy home, and the memories you make together will be priceless! There will be some sleepless nights, many accidents, and potentially some chewed-up shoes, but all these will make great memories down the road.
