National Pet Wellness

National Pet Wellness

October is National Pet Wellness Month. Pet wellness has to do with more than just having a happy dog. Pet wellness has to do with your dog’s health inside and out. This month pet care professionals and veterinarians like to promote topics in pet health to ensure our furry friends live their life to the fullest. These are all aspects of pet health and wellness to consider.

Nutrition and Supplements

Nutrition and food are apparent aspects of pet wellness. What you put into your body will reflect on their overall physical health and mood. There are a lot of different types of foods available for cats and dogs. It’s essential to read labels and feed your pet according to their age and health. Be aware of ingredients in the food you feed so your pet doesn’t suffer from any allergic reactions if sensitive to any ingredient. Supplements may also help your pet, depending on their needs. Omega 3 fatty acids are a common supplement for your pet’s development. Before you feed or give your dog anything you are unsure of, please consult your veterinarian.

Weight Management

Maintaining a healthy weight is essential to your pet’s health. Pets that become overweight are more prone to health issues and could potentially age quicker. A higher weight usually means more pressure on their body and bones. Heavier pets are more likely to be lethargic, accelerate issues like arthritis, and make hip dysplasia worse. By keeping your pets at a healthier weight, they will have more energy and be in better spirits.

Grooming and Dental Care

Depending on your dog’s breed, a regular grooming schedule may benefit them. Some dogs don’t need to be groomed often, so be sure to do your research. Your dog’s nails should be something that you look after regularly. Having long nails can get uncomfortable for your dog and can scratch you if they are a jumper. Cat owners are less likely to worry about cat grooming, but some cats need help grooming themselves, considering their health and age. Dental and oral health is an essential aspect of pet wellness. Both cats and dogs are carnivorous and need their teeth to chew their food. Brushing your pet’s teeth frequently can help them keep their teeth healthy and their mouths smelling fresh when they give you kisses.

Quality Time and Exercise

Spending quality time is essential for your pet’s wellness. Being with their favorite person will release all kinds of good emotions and feelings. Quality time can consist of doing activities together, like training, playing fetch, or just cuddling on the couch. Our pets are just happy that we are around them, and they love to observe us anytime they can.  Any time together will have your pet feeling their best. Exercise should be an essential part of your pet’s daily schedule. Whether you go for a short walk with your dog or play a game with some toys with your cat, they will be grateful for any time spent with them.

Regular Vet Visits

Keeping up with your vet appointments is another aspect of pet wellness to consider. Visiting and talking to your vet about any concerns you may have can help you keep track of your pet’s health. Vets are professionals, so please don’t hide any information that you think will help them help your pet. In addition to regular checkups, keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and ensure they are protected against any illnesses or diseases.
