National Dog Day

National Dog Day

Sometimes as pet owners, we’re too busy with everyday life to show enough appreciation and love to our dogs. This month there’s a special day that reminds us to show extra love and attention to the pups in our lives. August 26th is National Dog Day! This day aims to remind you to take some time out of your busy day to spend time with your pup and show them some love. Here are some activities you can do with your best furry friend.

Go for a Walk or Hike

A Friday morning or afternoon walk at a local trail can be the best way to start a day full of fun for National Dog Day! Austin has tons of trails around the area that are dog friendly with various difficulty levels. If your dog is well-trained and friendly, you can check out the Mary Moore Searight Offleash Trail. This trail is intended for social dogs to run around and play with others. For a more traditional route, you can check out the Turkey Creek Trail, a popular destination for active dogs and hikers. Whichever trail you choose, your dog will get a healthy dose of exercise and have a blast hiking by your side.

Plan a Playdate at a Local Park

If you don’t have the time to head out for a hike, you can always visit a local dog park so your dog can run around and play with their four-legged friends. Many dog parks around the Austin area may fit your dog’s needs and be closer to you than you think! Check out our blog on five dog parks to visit in the Austin area for canine fitness month for a list of great dog parks in the area! Be sure to check the weather before you go out and pack some water to keep you and your dog hydrated. If it’s a hot day, remember to find some rest in the shade where you and your pup can cool down.

Cook a Special Meal or Take them to a Patio

After a day of activity and fun, you are sure to work up an appetite. You can treat your pup to a special treat or meal on this particular day. There are tons of dog food recipes online for you to try. But, if you’re not much of a cook, then Austin has a bunch of dog-friendly patios you can take your dog to and enjoy a bite on the town. If there’s room for dessert, a doggie bakery can offer your pup some delicious baked goods! Let the city of Austin treat you and your dog to a day of delicious food and great company!

Donate to a Local Shelter or Animal Organization

National Dog Day is not only intended for dog owners. People who love dogs can celebrate and partake by spending time with their favorite dogs. They can spend time with their friends or family’s dog, volunteer at a shelter, or donate to a shelter. There are many ways to show your support to these fantastic and friendly creatures. Whichever way you decide to show your support, these dogs will be grateful you did.
